WILMINGTON, Ohio - Capital University scored two second-half goals in a 3-1 Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) victory over the Wilmington College men's soccer team at Williams Stadium on Wednesday evening.
The loss drops the Quakers to 9-7-0 and 4-4-0 in OAC while the Crusaders continue to lead the OAC standings at 7-1-0 and 13-3-0 overall.
The Crusaders had a good attacking outlet on throw ins thanks to Greg Knox with long throw ins that acted more like a corner kick when deep in Wilmington territory. These throw ins yielded a goal for the Crusaders in the 32nd minute when Sam Spirk got a head on a Knox throw in for the first goal of the evening.
The offense would pick up in the second half starting with Tristan Bentley for the Crusaders taking a long shot that took a deflection off a Quaker defender before rolling into the goal in the 57th minute. The Quakers would get a goal of their own in the 76th minute coming from leading scorer Niklas Martensson getting a head on a corner kick from Daniel Kappelin. Bentley would round off the score sheet with a goal in the 83rd minute assisted by Daniel Bundschuh with a cross deep inside the Quaker penalty area to an unmarked Bentley.
There were four yellow cards of the match three for Capital and one for Wilmington. Nick Scharfenberger would get booked in the 24th minute, Jacob Taylor received a caution in the 64th minute for a tactical foul and Matt Scheper got a yellow card in the 86th minute for delaying a restart. Treshaun Pate received a yellow card in the 62nd minute for the Quakers.
The win for Capital came without OAC leading scorer Chewy Gordon who was substituted out in the eighth minute and never returned to the game.
Both Goalkeepers had six saves with Felix Maurer in goal for the Quakers and Logan Weidman playing keeper for the Crusaders.
The Quakers finish out their regular season on the road at John Carroll University Saturday. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
