Junior Niklas Martensson played a part in every Wilmington College goal Saturday as the men's soccer team won their fourth straight game, beating Bethany, 3-1, in non-conference action at Townsend Field in Williams Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Wilmington opened the scoring in the fourth minute as sophomore Roman Kirschner (Opava, Czech Republic/Mendel's Grammer School) scored his fourth goal of the season. Martensson (Torna Hallestad, Sweden/NTI) was credited with the assist.
- Martensson took matters into his own hands in the 25th minute with an unassisted goal to push the WC lead to 2-nil. He added his team-leading sixth goal in 66th minute on a penalty kick. Freshman Wille Winald (Asa, Sweden/Elof Lindalv) drew the penalty kick after being taken down in the box.
- Bethany finally got on the board in the 89th minute, but it was a little too late for any comeback attempt.
- Wilmington held the shots lead, 17-6, and recorded nine of the game's 13 shots on goal.
- Senior Chris Bourque (Batavia, OH/Batavia) earned the win in goal, securing two saves on three shots.
- The Fightin' Quakers have outscored their opponents 18-4 during the winning streak.
COACHES CORNER
"I am really pleased with how we came out from the kickoff, getting an early goal from Roman (Kirschner)," said Wilmington head coach Bud Lewis. "We had a great performance from JC Brewer in shutting down one of Bethany's top attacking players.
"The second half, we played well and created several good scoring chances," Lewis continued. "We had another solid defensive effort from our back line, but gave up the shutout with a couple minutes left in the game."
