RICHMOND, IN – Freshman Wille Winald scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner, as the Wilmington College men's soccer team posted the 3-2 come back victory Wednesday over Earlham in non-conference action at Matlack-Messer Stadium.

  • With the victory, Wilmington holds a 3-0 lead in the Quaker Bowl series.
  • The Fightin' Quakers have now won three straight games to boost their record to 4-3-1.
  • Wilmington took an early lead as Winald (Asa, Sweden/Elof Lindalv), with an assist from junior Daniel Kappelin (Pixbo, Sweden/IHGR), scored in the tenth minute.
  • Earlham found the equalizer in the 19th minute, and the teams went into intermission locked in a one-all tie.
  • EC didn't waste anytime claiming the lead, scoring less than 90 seconds into the second.
  • Fortunately for Wilmington, its deficit didn't last long as sophomore Roman Kirschner (Opava, Czech Republic/Mendel's Grammer School) scored an unassisted goal one minute later.
  • Winald and Kappelin combined to give Wilmington the lead in the 52nd minute, and the Fightin' Quakers kept Earlham from posing any serious scoring threats over the final 39 minutes.
  • Winald is leads the team with five goals, and Kappelin has a team-high five assists.
  • Senior defender Nils Asteberg (Ojersjo, Sweden/Porthalla Gymnasium) was excellent; according to head coach Bud Lewis, in the defending of Earlham's long ball attacks.
  • In a physical game, 28 fouls were called and five yellow cards issued.

"We have been struggling scoring goals from what we call is our target forward," said Lewis. "We moved Daniel to that spot, and his vision and technical skills has been good for us, and Willie has been in the right place on the back side."

Wilmington stays home 3:30 p.m. Saturday, hosting Bethany in non-conference action.
