Late goal allows Muskies to escape with win

In a game that featured three lead changes in the final 25 minutes, it was the Wilmington College men's soccer team that came up on the losing end of a 4-3 decision to Muskingum Tuesday in Ohio Athletic Conference action on Townsend Field in Williams Stadium.

The Muskies took the final lead in the 87th minutes with a goal off the corner kick.

"This was another very disappointing loss because our kids played well in a lot of respects," said Wilmington head coach Bud Lewis. "We had a very disastrous penalty kick called. It was a critical call at a critical time, but our team bounced back nicely. It's a hard game some times, just cruel."

Sophomore Niklas Martensson (Torna Hallestad, Sweden/NTI) had a hand in all three of Wilmington's goals, assisting on two and scoring another.

"Niklas is the driving force for this team," said Lewis. "He is a very talented player. It's unfortunate it wasn't enough today."

Wilmington took the lead in the 23rd minute as freshman Carl Berstrom (Gothemburg, Sweden/Elof Lindalv) scored with freshman Anton Holmqvist (Tyreso, Sweden/Varmoto Gymnasium) and Martensson getting assists.

Muskingum tied the score in the 39th minute, and the teams headed into the half tied at one.

In an 11-minute span of the second half, each team scored twice with Wilmington sandwiching two Muskie tallies. The two Muskingum scores – a penalty kick and another goal – came 30 seconds apart.

Less than three minutes after Muskingum took the lead, Bergstrom tallied his second marker of the game off a pass from Martensson.

Senior Nick Baker (Indianapolis, IN/Decatur Central) made four saves on eight shots in the loss.

Wilmington (4-11-2 overall, 1-7 OAC) caps the season 7 p.m. Saturday, hosting Heidelberg in the final home games for two seniors, Baker and Alec Rivers (Ross, OH/Ross).
