Men's Soccer stays alive in tournament quest

NEW CONCORD – The Wilmington College men's soccer team inched closer to qualifying for the Ohio Athletic Conference tournament Tuesday with their 3-0 win over Muskingum.

It comes down to the final game of the season as the Fightin' Quakers must beat Heidelberg (5-2-1) 2 p.m. Saturday. The Student Princes are 6-2-1 in their last nine games, including three of the last four. They defeated Capital, 3-1, earlier Tuesday.

"It was a big win for us. I am pleased with the boys today," said Wilmington head coach Bud Lewis. "We have been in playoff mode since Baldwin Wallace (October 17).

Since that loss, Wilmington unbeaten in three matches.

Freshman Joel Yosef (Alingas, Sweden/ Alstrommergymnasiet) put the game away in the blink of an eye in the second half. With Wilmington leading 1-0, Yosef took a pass from freshman Nils Asteberg (Ojersjo, Sweden/Porthalla Gymnasium) from outside the box, and beat the keeper at the far post.

But he wasn't done. Seconds later, he intercepted the Muskies' back pass and defeated the keeper in a one versus one situation. Two goals, 11 seconds, and Wilmington could breathe easier knowing a mistake couldn't ultimately cost them much needed points.

Wilmington took the lead in the 33rd minute thanks to a Muskingum own goal.

Freshman R.J. Mancini (Cincinnati, OH/Glen Este) won for the fourth time in as many starts, recording two saves. Lewis added Mancini made a huge save in the first half to keep Muskingum from finding the equalizer.

The Fightin' Quakers also showed tremendous poise in the contest as Muskingum was called for 17 fouls and carded for five yellows. While frustration was seemingly getting to the home team, Wilmington continued to unleash shots – outshooting MU 19-8, including an 8-2 edge in shots on goal.
