Garrison's goal catapults WC to victory

Freshman Grady Garrison picked an opportune time to score his first career goal.

With the game tied at one, Garrison (Cincinnati, OH/McNicholas) scored the first of two goals in less than 90 seconds as Wilmington defeated Mount Union, 3-1, Saturday in Ohio Athletic Conference action at Williams Stadium.

"It was a sigh of relief, and more importantly … we are a good team and we let this team stay in on us because we didn't put our chances away," said Wilmington head coach Bud Lewis. "Any team can beat you if you don't get the job done."

Garrison was only in the game for two minutes when he found space down the right sideline, dribbled to toward the goal and drilled a shot past the keeper.

"Grady showed a lot of promise in the beginning of the season," said Lewis. "He is a proven finisher and he just hasn't been to form in the last couple of weeks. Everyone up front was struggling striking on goal, so Grady came in off the bench to provide a huge lift for the team. Everything was just what you want from a goal scorer, and that was huge."

Freshman Joel Yosef (Alingas, Sweden / Alstrommergymnasiet) added an insurance tally 73 seconds later in the 80th minute off a double assist from seniors Daniel Wicks (Cincinnati, OH/Reading) and Martin Holmquist (Karlstad, Sweden/Alvkulle Gymnasiet).

The victory enabled Wilmington keeps its chances of earning a spot in the Ohio Athletic Conference tournament alive. The Fightin' Quakers need at least a win and a tie in their last two games to have a chance, while two victories could solidify a spot.

Lewis pointed to the play of Aaron Basford (Monroe, OH/Monroe), Taylor Estes (Reading, OH/Reading) and Brandon Klepach (Centerville, OH/Centerville) in the back third in preserving the victory.

Additionally, the move of Wicks to the midfield from goalkeeper has really benefitted the Wilmington offense. He has three goals and an assist in the team's last five halves of action.

"Dan Wicks has really been the spark plug for us, and he scored a great goal again today for us," said Lewis. "He is very confident finisher and really could have had two or three others. So Dan was really a spark for us today; what a senior captain is supposed to be."

Wilmington (7-7-4 overall, 2-3-2 OAC) travels to Muskingum 7 p.m. Tuesday.
