Wicks scores lone goal in loss to BW

BEREA – For most of the season, set pieces and bad penalties have reared their ugly heads at the wrong time for the Wilmington College men's soccer team. Both popped up in the first half as the Fightin' Quakers fell to Baldwin Wallace Friday, 2-1, in Ohio Athletic Conference action at George Finnie Stadium.

Further complicating matters for Wilmington's attempted comeback were two yellow cards on senior Drew Fields, forcing WC to play the entire second half down a player.

"We are making very severe mistakes," said Wilmington head coach Bud Lewis. "Things just aren't going our way. We just can't find the back of the net."

Despite having two great scoring chances in the first 10 minutes, Wilmington fell behind early as the Yellow Jackets scored in the eighth minute. Thanks to a penalty kick, Baldwin Wallace added onto its lead in the 43rd minute.

After starting the game in goal, senior Daniel Wicks (Cincinnati, OH/Reading) moved back to his natural midfield position. Freshman R.J. Mancini (Cincinnati, OH/Glen Este) returned to goal for the first time in two weeks, and he made two saves on two shots.

Meanwhile, Wicks paid dividends in the second half – pulling the Fightin' Quakers to within one with his third goal of the season. Senior Martin Holmquist (Karlstad, Sweden/Alvkulle Gymnasiet) dropped off a pass inside the box and Wicks was able to beat the keeper for Wilmington's lone goal in the 76th minute.

Wilmington maintained the momentum from the goal, and put the host Yellow Jackets under immense defensive pressure. They tallied five corner kicks and four shots in the final 14 minutes, unfortunately, WC couldn't find the equalizing goal.

Wilmington (5-7-3), which is on an eight-game winless streak, returns home 7 p.m. Wednesday to play Otterbein in OAC action.
