Holmquist, Wicks help WC secure draw

Staring down the barrel at another Ohio Athletic Conference loss, Wilmington stormed back for a pivotal 2-2 draw with Capital Tuesday at Williams Stadium.

With things looking bleak as the Fightin' Quakers trailed 2-0 with 10 minutes remaining, a foul and penalty kick gave Wilmington life. Senior Martin Holmquist (Karlstad, Sweden/Alvkulle Gymnasiet) pulled WC to within one in the 80th minute, and then scored the equalizer with less than four minutes remaining in the game.

"The game had a lot of different phases to it," said Wilmington head coach Bud Lewis. "They came out strong in the first half. You hate to give up penalties. Last year we gave up one, and we have given up three straight this year. We have to quit making those mistakes. This team showed their heart because being down two nil to the eighth ranked team in the (Great Lakes) region, and all of a sudden we made some moves and started fighting, and all of a sudden we started controlling the game."

Wilmington had a golden opportunity to record the game-winner as the ball rolled across the front of the goal, but a WC player couldn't find a foot on the ball.

The Fightin' Quakers tallied four shots in the overtime, including a shot by senior Evan Schlagetter (Sidney, OH/Sidney) that just missed the upper 90.

"Unfortunately, we didn't make it happen in overtime," said Lewis. "The last 30 minutes of this game – last 10 minutes of regulation and 20 minutes of overtime – it was about them keeping the ball out of our net."

It was a testy game with 27 total fouls and three yellow cards issued in the game.

Senior Daniel Wicks (Cincinnati, OH/Reading) continued his stellar play between the pipes, making eight saves in 110:00 minutes.

Wilmington (5-6-3 overall, 0-2-2 OAC) travels to Baldwin Wallace 7 p.m. Friday in a pivotal OAC match.
