Men's Soccer plays to draw with Colonels

Evan Schlagetter's goal in the 81st minute enabled the Wilmington College men's soccer team to escape with a 1-1 tie against Centre Wednesday in non-conference action at Williams Stadium.

"Centre is a very good team," said Wilmington head coach Bud Lewis. "They played one of the toughest schedules in the country up until now. Their record doesn't reflect the talent they have. We lost to them 4-nil last year, so this game was very important for us. For the most part the game was back and forth. The red card really changed the game."

In the 69th minute, a Centre player received his second yellow card of the game – resulting in a red card - forcing the Colonels to play the rest of the game down one player.

However, in the immediate after-match Centre used a free kick from 30 yards away to gain the lead three minutes later.

"I was very disappointed in giving up that goal because we are better than that," said Lewis. "We gave up a set piece goal, and we are good enough, strong enough … I was just very disappointed."

The disappointment couldn't last long as Schlagetter (Sidney, OH/Sidney) found some open space from 20 yards away and blasted the equalizer past the Centre goalkeeper. The goal was the culmination of some offensive work as Wilmington launched 17 shots in regulation.

Wilmington continued to work offensively in the extra sessions as the Fightin' Quakers unleashed six shots, compared to just one for Centre. In total, WC outshot the Colonels, 23-14.

Senior Daniel Wicks (Cincinnati, OH/Reading) played all 110 minutes, allowing one goals and making five saves.

Wilmington (5-2-1) travels to Case Western Reserve 7 p.m. Saturday in non-conference action.
