Men's Soccer blanked by Maryville

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, GA – The Wilmington College men's soccer team ran into a 'buzzsaw' Saturday as they fell to Maryville (TN), Saturday, 3-0, at Scotland Yard on the campus of Covenant College.

After seemingly having the momentum for nearly the first 22 minutes of the contest, Wilmington saw the Scots broke the scoreless tie in the 23rd minute.

"We woke up a buzzsaw," said Wilmington head coach Bud Lewis. "The first 20 minutes was all Wilmington, and all of a sudden they scored that goal and it lifted their spirits. They relaxed, settled in and – much like the Wittenberg game – we never looked comfortable on the field. They just caught on fire and there wasn't much we could do on defense."

Maryville tallied another goal in the first half to take a 2-0 lead into the locker room, and capped off the scoring with a goal in the 72nd minute.

As a team, the Fightin' Quakers managed 10 shots, three of them on goal.

Senior Taylor Estes (Reading, OH/Reading) and senior Martin Holmquist (Karlstad, Sweden/Alvkulle Gymnasiet) were named to the David Taafe Invitational All-Tournament team.

Senior Daniel Wicks (Reading, OH/Reading) finished with nine saves, while allowing three goals.

Wilmington (2-2) hosts Transylvania 7 p.m. Thursday in non-conference action.
