Tornberg nets OT winner

Freshman Markus Tornberg scored less than two minutes into overtime as Wilmington kept its postseason chances alive, beating Marietta, 2-1, Saturday at Charlie Gilhart Field.

Tornberg (Stockholm, Sweden / Hersby Gymnasium) slid his header near post past the Marietta keeper for the winning goal. Sophomore Nick Toney (Morrow, OH/Little Miami) tipped a header over to Tornberg for the assist, and sent the Wilmington bench into a frenzy.

The Fightin' Quakers improved to 3-4 in the OAC, and stayed a game behind Mount Union and Baldwin Wallace for the final two playoff spots.

"It was a very important game for us to get," said head coach Bud Lewis. "For us to get back into the playoff hunt, it was a must game."

Wilmington attacked the Pioneers all game long to the tune of a 24-5 shot advantage.

"Marietta played a very strong defensive game," said Lewis. "Their goalkeeper had some great saves as well as our lack of composure near the goal. Marietta had two really good scoring chances and scored on one of them."

It looked as though the Pioneers tally in the 71st minute would be enough to lift Marietta to the victory.

However, a foul in the box on Tornberg allowed Wilmington to gain the equalizer on a penalty kick from junior Daniel Wicks (Reading, OH/Reading).

"There was a lot of pushing and shoving in the box on corner kicks all game long," said Lewis.

The game marked the final home game for five seniors, Anton Niklasson (Ockero, Sweden / Frolunda Gymnasiet), Caleb Betz (Stoutsville, OH/Logan Elm), Jeff Graham (Kettering, OH/Archbishop Alter), Erik Hammer (Stockholm, Sweden / Ava Gymnasium) and Henrik Hornnaess (Brumunddal, Norway / Hamar Katerdralskole).

Wilmington travels to Ohio Northern 4 p.m. Tuesday in Ohio Athletic Conference action.
