BEXLEY, OH – If you need any indication how close men's soccer is in the Ohio Athletic Conference, just look at the Wilmington results since conference play has started. The Fightin' Quakers have gone into overtime in each of the four OAC matches this season, and following their 2-1 victory over Capital, Wilmington stands 3-0-1 in league action.

"This is particularly an important win for us," said WC head coach Bud Lewis, "in part because they are a good, well-coached team. I don't think we were very sharp. You have to give (Capital) credit. They did a good job of putting us under pressure."

Junior Dan Wicks (Reading, OH/Reading) recorded his third game-winning goal of the season, beating the keeper on a penalty kick in the 97th minute. The penalty kick was set up when junior Jeff Graham (Kettering, OH/Archbishop Carroll) played a ball back into the box and a Capital defender was called for a handball. It was the second time this season Wicks won a game with a penalty kick.

Statistically, the Crusaders were able to launch more shots and get more corners. However, Lewis was calm heading into the extra minutes.

"Going into overtime was the most confident I felt all match," said Lewis. "We were playing with purpose. It's a game in which we didn't play our best. But that is the sign of a good team."

Wilmington took the early lead in the eighth minute when sophomore Evan Schlagetter (Sidney, OH/Sidney) ripped a shot from 30 yards out past the Capital keeper.

For the remainder of the half, the Fightin' Quaker defense and junior goalkeeper Antonio Trujillo (Cincinnati, OH/Princeton) took over. Trujillo handled Cap's lone chance in the first 45, and pushed a dangerous Crusader shot over the crossbar in the second half. He finished with three saves in posting the victory.

WC (8-4-1 overall, 3-0-1 OAC) returns to Charlie Gilhart Field 7 p.m. Saturday against Baldwin-Wallace.
