Wicks' PK lifts WC

DEFIANCE – Junior Dan Wicks' (Cincinnati, OH/Reading) penalty kick in the game's 53rd minute provided the margin of victory for the Wilmington College men's soccer team as they defeated Defiance, 1-0, in non-conference action.

"It was probably not as close as the score," said head coach Bud Lewis. "But, 1-0 is not a big margin. Defiance is a dangerous team. They are big and tall and they find different ways to be dangerous."

The penalty kick was forced by freshman Marcus Torbjornsson (Langas, Sweden) as he played a nice through ball and was taken down on the edge of the penalty box.

Wilmington was playing without two of their three captains as sophomore Evan Schlagetter (Sidney, OH/Sidney) and junior Henrik Hornaess (Brumunddal, Norway/Hamar Katerdralskole) missed the game with injuries. Additionally, junior Erik Hammer (Stockholm, Sweden/Ava Gymnasium) was unavailable due to a red card issued in the previous game.

With all of the missing personnel, Wick was forced to move to the midfield. He led the team with four shots, three of which were on goal and tallied the only marker.

Junior Antonio Trujillo (Cincinnati, OH/Princeton) and junior Anton Niklasson (Ockero, Sweden/Frolundagymnasiet ) combined for the shutout with three saves.

Wilmington (4-4) will travel to Granville, OH to face Denison in non-conference action 7 p.m. Tuesday.
