AUSTINTOWN, OH – The Wilmington College men's soccer team had three players, including two first-teamers, earn All-Ohio Athletic Conference honors, the league announced today (November 7, 2012).
Junior Henrik Hornaess (Brumunddal, Norway/Hamar Katerdralskole) and sophomore Martin Holquist (Karlstad, Sweden/Alvkulle Gymnasiet) were named first-team All-OAC, while sophomore Dan Wicks (Cincinnati, OH/Reading) earned honorable mention.
Hornaess became one of Wilmington's most dangerous weapons with his striking ability on set pieces, and he finished the season second in the OAC with 11 assists.
"We moved Henrik into the midfield after our fifth game and his technical play and ability to create dangerous scoring chances was a huge factor in our team success particularly in OAC matches," said Wilmington head coach Bud Lewis. "Being one of four midfielder selected to the first team demonstrated the respect he earned against OAC opponents. Henrik's services on set piece gave us great scoring opportunities several times each game."
Holmquist's defensive prowess was one of the reasons for Wilmington's success this season. He helped the Quakers record five shutouts this season. Holmquist was an honorable mention All-OAC selection last season.
"Martin had an outstanding season for us as a defender," said Lewis. "His technical ability with the ball, his size and strength on the ball were qualities that made a big difference in our team success. Martin's ability to attack out of the back and his vision and ability to play dangerous balls to our midfield and forwards was exceptional. He is very deserving of being recognized as one of three defenders to make first team All-OAC."
Wicks, who was the team's captain, was truly the heart and soul of the soccer team. His development as a player is one of the reasons for Wilmington's success in 2012. He led the team with five goals and was second with five assists.
"Dan is really developing into one of the top players in the OAC and this season was a breakout season for him," said Lewis. "Dan was instrumental in leading our team from the midfield position and initiating our attack from the midfield. Dan improves each and every game and will continue to play a big role in our efforts to win the OAC Soccer Championship in 2013."
Wilmington finished the season 10-8-1 and fell in overtime to John Carroll in the semifinals of the Ohio Athletic Conference tournament.
