Men's soccer stings Baldwin-Wallace

WILMINGTON – There wouldn't be any need for extra minutes Saturday as Wilmington returned home to Charlie Gilhart Field to post a 3-1 victory over Baldwin-Wallace in Ohio Athletic Conference action. It was the first time in five games the Quakers didn't play an overtime game.

"This was a very important game," said WC head coach Bud Lewis. "B-W is a very good team. I was very pleased with our back four, especially in the second half."

The defenders primarily composed of Joey Brown (Dayton, OH/Bethel), Jesse Buhrman (Westlake, OH/Westlake), Drew Fields (Terrace Park, OH/Mariemont) and Martin Holmquist (Karlstad, Sweden/Alvkulle Gymnasiet) helped limit the Yellow Jackets to just two shots in the second half, and carried the shutout through 85 minutes.

Wilmington has taken pride this season on creating dangerous chances off set pieces, and they tallied two of its three goals off those opportunities. Junior Henrik Hornnaess (Brumunddal, Norway/Hamar Katerdralskole) was the trigger man on both goals.

In the game's 6th minute, Hornnaess took a free kick from right outside the penalty box and sailed it past the B-W goalkeeper.

"It was a tremendous goal by Henrik," said Lewis. "We have been focusing on set pieces. We created a lot of corner kicks. It makes all the difference when you have a guy that serves the ball like Henrik."

Hornnaess was on the serving end of Wilmington's third goal as Holmquist headed home his corner kick in the game's 66th minute to put the game away. Junior Dan Wicks (Cincinnati, OH/Reading) scored the second goal of the game in the 57th minute.

With Baldwin-Wallace struggling to clear the ball from WC's offensive third, a loose ball found its way to Wicks' foot, and the midfielder knew exactly what to do with it.

Wilmington (9-4-1 overall, 4-0-1 OAC) travels to Otterbein 4 p.m. Tuesday for a conference match with the Cardinals. Otterbein comes into the game searching for it first OAC victory, but the Quakers know better than to look past them. The Cardinals came into Charlie Gilhart Field last season with similar credentials and defeated the Quakers, 3-0.
