Esselstein with OT winner

Andrew Esselstein won the faceoff, took the groundball and seven seconds later, he scored the game-winning goal as the Wilmington College men's lacrosse team posted the 10-9 overtime victory over Ohio Northern in Ohio Athletic Conference action on Townsend Field in Williams Stadium.

In a tightly-contested game, neither team held more than a one-goal lead and the game was tied at the end of every period. The game was tied nine times and Esselstein's (Dayton, OH/Archbishop Alter) goal gave WC its fifth lead of the game.

Junior Paul Koerbel (Maineville, OH/Kings) kept the Fightin' Quakers in the game with his stellar play between the pipes. Ohio Northern launched 30 shots in the first half with Koerbel being credited with eight saves. In the meantime, the Fightin' Quakers only managed nine shots and the ONU goalkeeper only had one save. The Polar Bears outshot Wilmington 54-21, but Koerbel finished with 18 saves as compared to the three saves for the ONU keeper.

Trailing by one with a shade over three minutes remaining, senior Jalen Jackson (Hilliard, OH/Bradley) and sophomore Jhordan Lang (Sunbury, OH/Big Walnut) scored 35 seconds apart to give Wilmington the 9-8 lead with 2:26 remaining.

A Wilmington turnover with two minutes remaining gave the Polar Bears hope, and they cashed in on the game-tying goal with 1:13 remaining.

Lang finished with two goals and two assists to lead the Fightin' Quakers. Junior Reid Delaney (Wooster, OH/Wooster) and Jackson tallied two goals with one assist each. Junior Chris Hein (McKinney, TX/McKinney) also scored twice for Wilmington.

Wilmington (6-7 overall, 2-4 OAC) wraps up the 2016 season by traveling to OAC-leader Baldwin Wallace 1 p.m. Saturday.
