Second half outburst lifts @WCMensLax

Wilmington head coach Domenic Marzano signaled his inner Aaron Rodgers at halftime of the Fightin' Quakers home win over LaRoche.

With his team struggling to find the net over the first 30 minutes, the message was simple.

"I told everybody not to hit the panic button. Just everybody put your panic button away," said Marzano. "Their goalie played great in the first half, he made a lot of athletic saves. We were getting the shots we wanted, but that kid was making plays – and that is what players do. When we got into the locker room, it was relax, stick to your game and it will go our way."

After surrendering an early third quarter tally, WC turned up its marksmanship and went sniper on the Redhawks goal en route to the 13-10 non-conference victory on Townsend Field at Williams Stadium.

Wilmington scored four straight goals in a seven-minute stretch to reclaim the lead in the third. Four different players – junior Evan Osborne (Middletown, OH/Lebanon), sophomore Reid Delaney (Wooster, OH/Wooster), junior Jalen Jackson (Hilliard, OH/Bradley) and Nick Perry (Carmel, IN/Carmel) –scored during the span.

"It was a matter of us burying a few shots," said Marzano. "When our guys have momentum, we look good. We were taking the same shots in the second half that we took in the first half, they were just better placed."

The Redhawks didn't fold when faced with a two-goal deficit and tied the game with a goal to end the third period and a goal to start the fourth.

Wilmington's scoring bonanza continued in the fourth quarter on the heels of LaRoche earning the equalizer just 23 seconds in the final period. Less than a minute after the Redhawks netted the tying goal, WC built a two-goal cushion.

Junior Alexander Gossard (Galloway, OH/Hilliard Bradley) scored off a Perry assist 37 seconds later, and Perry added to Wilmington's lead 19 seconds later. The Fightin' Quakers added a tally for a three-goal advantage, and LaRoche didn't get to within two goals at any point for the remainder of the game.

Freshman Devon Maki (Pickerington, OH/Central) led the team with three goals and one assist, while Jackson, Perry and Gossard each finished with two goals and one assist.

The Fightin' Quakers were 30-for-33 in clear attempts and launched 53 shots on the game.

Sophomore Paul Koerbel (Maineville, OH/Kings) improved to 7-2 on the season, turning back 19 Redhawks shots.

"Paul kept us in the game early, kept us in the game late," said Marzano. "He finally came to life right when we needed him to. They had some good shots, Paul just made some saves. He was really calm and that was a big part of our defense. When Paul plays like that, our defense rallies around him."

Wilmington improved to 7-2, and will step into Ohio Athletic Conference action 6 p.m. Friday. The Fightin' Quakers travel to Berea and will face Baldwin Wallace.
