Late goal sends MLAX to loss

Trine's Paul Carquist scored with 16 seconds remaining to lift the Thunder to the 8-7 victory over the Wilmington College men's lacrosse team Saturday in non-conference action at Williams Stadium.

With about a minute remaining, Wilmington had possession looking to hold for the final shot. However, an unforced turnover gave Trine possession – and they took advantage by putting the ball in the back of the net for the game-winner. The Fightin' Quakers committed 10 turnovers in the final period, and 27 in the game.

"We have improved tremendously (since last year)," said Wilmington head coach Domenic Marzano. "That is a team I scheduled to see where we are this year. They beat us by 13 goals last year, and to come down to the last possession – I am pretty happy with that. We haven't worked on that part of the game, the last-minute execution, and I think some of our youth showed up at the end."

Wilmington's Devon Maki (Pickerington, OH/Central) was able to win the face-off to give the Fightin' Quakers hope. But, WC missed two shots in the closing moments and fell to 2-2 on the season.

Trine took the early lead with a marker three minutes into the game, but Maki responded less than 30 seconds later. He gave Wilmington the lead midway through the opening quarter. The lead didn't last long as the Thunder scored two power-play goals to round out the quarter.

It was the only two power-play goals of the game as the teams combined to kill the last 10 man-up opportunities.

"We have to cut our penalties down, and stay out the penalty box, we know that," said Marzano. "But the biggest thing is we kept our composure. When we went into the game, we wanted to make sure we didn't make the same mistake twice. I think our defense played pretty smart today and Paul had a heck of a game. He made some great stops when we needed him too."

The Thunder added a goal early in the second quarter for a two-goal advantage.

Junior Jalen Jackson (Hilliard, OH/Bradley) scored twice and Maki once as WC tallied three of the last four goals in the first half to knot the game at five at the break. Maki finished with four goals and Jackson finished with three to account for all of WC's scoring.

The defense for both teams tightened in the second half as each team only scored once in the third quarter. Early goals in the fourth quarter kept the game tied until Trine found the winning game late.

Sophomore Paul Koerbel (Maineville, OH/Kings) took the loss (2-2), making 15 saves.

Wilmington hosts Calvin 7 p.m. Tuesday at Williams Stadium.
