Eight players score in 14-2 win

Freshman Devon Maki (Pickerington, OH/Central) was brilliant in his collegiate debut scoring four goals with an assist as the Wilmington College men's lacrosse team opened the 2015 campaign with a 14-2 victory over Wabash Friday on Townsend Field in Williams Stadium.

In all eight different players found the back of the net for the Fightin' Quakers.

"It was great to finally play a game," said Wilmington head coach Domenic Marzano. "The guys were ready to just get a full field and play. We had some early season errors, but they are quick fixes. We need to keep getting better every practice and game."

Wilmington scored the first five goals of the game, including four in the first period. It was one of two periods in which the WC defense held the Little Giants without a goal. The Fightin' Quakers led 7-1 at halftime, and 9-1 after the third period.

A lot of Wilmington's strength lies in the harmony of the defense and the dazzling play of sophomore Paul Koerbel (Maineville, OH/Kings) between the pipes.

"Our defense played very well," said Marzano. "Their communication and chemistry really stuck out today. We have a lot of experience at defense, which really helped. Paul had to bail us out a couple of times with some big saves. He did a great job in the cage tonight. You can tell that he was comfortable and worked great with the defense."

Junior Alexander Gossard (Galloway, OH/Hilliard Bradley) added three goals, while junior Evan Osborne (Middletown, OH/Lebanon) recorded two goals. Sophomore Reid Delaney (Wooster, OH/Wooster) dished out a team-high two assists to go along with a goal.

Sophomore Chris Perry (Carmel, IN/Carmel) and junior Jalen Jackson (Hilliard, OH/Bradley) each had a goal and an assist.

Wilmington (1-0) returns to the field, traveling to Fontbonne Sunday.
