The Wilmington College men's basketball team welcomes Ohio Northern 7 p.m. Wednesday for their Ohio Athletic Conference home opener.
NCAA SERIES: Wilmington trails the NCAA series, 14-23, most coming while members of the Ohio Athletic Conference. The teams have split the season series in 11 of the 16 OAC seasons.
MEET THE POLAR BEARS: Ohio Northern kicked off the Ohio Athletic Conference action with a resounding 87-65 win over Capital.
In the victory, the starters combined for 80 of the team's 87 points, including a team-high 21 points from guard Devon Allen. Four of the five starters played at least 29 minutes. The Polar Bears were without starting point guard Joey Hurless.
Junior Nate Burger, who came off the bench in the first four games, leads the team with 17.8 points per game, while shooting 46.9 percent from beyond the arc. Burger replaced Hurless, who was injured, in Saturday's win over Capital. Ironically his lowest scoring output (13 points) came in his start. He is also leading the team with 4.0 assists.
Senior Devon Allen is second on the team with 13.2 points, shooting 40.4 percent from the field. Sophomore Ryan Bruns is second on the team with 6.8 rebounds and is third with 12.8 points.
Senior Aron Thress leads the team with 7.4 rebounds to go along with 9.2 points.
THE LAST TIME: The Wilmington College men's basketball team had a chance late, but the Ohio Northern Polar Bears hit all 10 of their free throws down the stretch to knock off the Fightin' Quakers, 103-94, Wednesday in Ohio Athletic Conference action at the ONU Sports Center.
Zach McCorkle led the team with 22 points and seven rebounds in just 19 minutes of action, while Andrew Russell added 17 points.
Christian Jones added 14 points, a career-high six assists and five boards, while sophomore Nathan Scott reached double figures for the second time in his career with 10 points off the bench.
DOUBLE FIGURES: Wilmington enters the game with three players averaging more than 10 points, led by sophomore Andrew Russell - who is dropping 14.2 points. Despite leading the team in scoring, Russell has only led the team in scoring once.
Freshman Noah Chatman and junior Christian Jones are tied for second with 12.0 points each.
THIRTY PIECE: Freshman Noah Chatman had a very successful homecoming so to speak. The freshman from Tennessee scored 30 points on 14-of-16 shooting with four rebounds in a trip to Memphis. The 14 made field goals were the most by any player in Wilmington's NCAA-era.
WE ROLL DEEP: Wilmington's rotation features 11 players that are averaging at least 9.7 minutes per game. In addition, no player is playing more than 24 minutes. In contrast, three players averaged more than 25 last season.
JUMPMAN: The two-time dunk champion Kevin Lewis is using his jumping ability to lead the team with 5.5 rebounds. He pulled down a career-high 12 boards against Berea.
BALANCE: Four different players, in the team's six games, have led the team in scoring. Christian Jones has led the team in three different games.
