Comeback falls short, season comes to end

BEREA – The Wilmington College senior class wasn't quite ready for their careers to come to an end. Unfortunately, they couldn't do it alone.

Seniors Dwight Johnson (Dayton, OH/Jefferson), R.J. Leppert (Liberty Township, OH/Lakota East) and Jonathan Bibbs (Dayton, OH/Chaminade-Julienne) combined for 51 of Wilmington's 67 points, but the Fightin' Quakers had their season come to an end Tuesday with a 71-67 loss to Baldwin Wallace in the first round of the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament.

Other than Johnson, Leppert and Bibbs, guard Jarrin Taul (Ripley, OH/Ripley) and forward Ben McGriff (Beavercreek, OH/Beavercreek) played their final collegiate games.

Trailing by three with 5.1 seconds remaining, Johnson was sent purposely to the line. After making the first, he intentionally missed the second. However, Jake Fetheroff rebounded the miss, and sealed the game with two free throws.

Baldwin Wallace scored the first five points of the game, and maintained a lead for the entire first half. The Yellow Jackets lead grew to as much as 14 in the opening 20 minutes, and BW took a 12-point lead into the break.

Wilmington opened the second half on an 18-5 run, capped by a Law Williams (Dayton, OH/Thurgood Marshall) three-pointer. Three times and four lead changes later, the Yellow Jackets reclaimed the lead for good. WC stayed close, but couldn't get the key defensive stop.

Possibly the biggest shot came with a little more than one minute remaining, and the shot clock near expiration, BW's Jaron Crowe drilled a three-pointer to push the lead to five. Baldwin Wallace went 7-of-8 from the charity stripe down the stretch to put the game on ice.

Johnson scored 19 of his game-high 23 points in the second half to keep the Fightin' Quakers in striking distance. He added a team-high six assists and two steals.

Leppert, before fouling out, added 16 points, seven rebounds and three assists, while Bibbs tallied 12 points and five boards.

Wilmington wraps up the 2014-15 campaign at 11-14.
