WILMINGTON, Ohio – John Carroll University (JCU), ranked No. 9 in the most recent D3Football.com Top 25 Poll, ran for 614 yards in a 66-19 victory over the Wilmington College football team on Saturday afternoon.
The Fightin' Quaker defense nearly stopped the Blue Streaks on their first possession, but JCU converted a fourth-and-one near midfield. Seven plays later and Michael Cangane scored on a six-yard run. After a stop, it was Josh DeLozier's turn for a six-yard touchdown run for JCU. Trailing 14-0, the Wilmington defense held JCU to a field goal on its next possession, but couldn't stop the Cangane from scoring another touchdown after a Quaker drive stalled.
Dusty Lykins stepped up and forced a fumble on the next JCU possession, setting up the Wilmington offense with good field position. Tyler Butcher made sure the Quakers wouldn't waste the field position, nailing a 35-yard field goal. The sophomore would add another field goal from 43 yards later in the quarter as Wilmington trailed 31-6 at halftime.
The second half opened well for Wilmington as Kyle Barrett found Luke Richardson for a completion for a first down. Richardson made a man miss and outran the Blue Streak defense for a 74-yard touchdown on the second play of the second half. The Quakers couldn't stop the JCU running attack, however, as the visitors tacked on three more scores as the fourth quarter began. Samuel Coleman would connect with De'Anta Sanon for another long touchdown, this one 71 yards, for the Quakers' last score of the game.
JCU tallied 664 yards of offense to Wilmington's 269. The Blue Streaks held a 614-49 advantage in rushing yards while the Quakers threw for 220 yards compared to 50 for JCU. The hosts forced three turnouts and committed just one.
Individually, Barrett completed 9-of-21 passes for 149 yards and one touchdown while Coleman threw the one long touchdown pass to Sanon. DJ Chambers led the way on the ground with 24 yards while Ace Taylor caught four passes.
Three Blue Streaks – DeLozier, Devin Lermick and Canganelli – all rushed over a dozen times for over 120 yards each. DeLozier had 184 yards and four touchdowns to lead the way for JCU.
Defensively, Tre'Quez Parks finished with 15 tackles for Wilmington including a forced fumble while Tavion Bryant finished with eight tackles including six solo tackles. Joey Bates led the Blue Streak defense with eight tackles.
Wilmington (1-7, 0-7 OAC) heads to Capital University next Saturday.
