Wilmington Football comes up short in loss to Heidelberg 37-14

TIFFIN, Ohio -- The Wilmington College football team lost in a tough game 37-14 against Heidelberg University. Wilmington's offense came up short without scoring on three drives in which the ball was turned over to Heidelberg.  

Wilmington falls to 2-6 overall, 1-6 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Heidelberg improves to a 6-2 record, 5-2 in the Ohio Athletic Conference.

In the loss, quarterback Luke Creditt threw for one touchdown and rushed for one touchdown.

Bryan Gonzalez led the way for the Wilmington defense totaling 8 solo tackles along with three assisted tackles.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

Wilmington struggled to get anything going in the first four drives of the game, resulting in two punts and two turnovers.

Heidelberg came out of the gates fast with scoring two touchdowns and one field goal in their first three drives of the game.  Wilmington answered back late in the second quarter with a 16 play 95 yard touchdown drive cutting the Heidelberg lead to 17-7 at the half.

Wilmington's Luke Creditt capped off late in the second quarter drive with a 7 yard touchdown pass to wide receiver PJ Meyer.

Wilmington came out of the half with the chance to cut the lead down even more, but an interception by Student Princes Michael Warden stopped that drive. Wilmington went back and forth in the third quarter with Heidelberg, but not without allowing another touchdown to Heidelberg putting the score at 24-7 at the end of the third quarter.

Wilmington mounted a drive that started during the end of the third quarter, with Luke Creditt completing the drive in the beginning of the fourth quarter with a three yard rushing touchdown.  Wilmington brought the score to 24-14, but were unable to cut into the difference anymore.

Heidelberg finished the fourth quarter scoring 13 straight points leading them to a 37-14 victory against Wilmington.

 

 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

Gonzalez finished the day with 11 total tackles leading the way for Wilmington's defense.

CJ Thompsonand Steve Broussard both chipped in with seven total tackles on the day.

Creditt was able to move the ball around during today's game, varying the offense while completing passes to nine different receivers for a total of 117 yards.

The rushing attack for the Quakers came on a balanced attack with Creditt totaling 69 yards on 20 rushes, Gino Hinton totaling 75 yards on 12 rushes and Eric Flynn Jr. totaling 57 yards on 8 rushes.

 

 

UP NEXT

The Quakers host Ohio Northern University (5-3, 4-3 OAC) next Saturday. Kickoff in Wilmington is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
