Football falls to Muskingum

The Wilmington College football team allowed 33 unanswered points in the second and third quarters, and the Fightin' Quakers fell to Muskingum Saturday, 43-14, at Williams Stadium in Ohio Athletic Conference action.

After Muskingum scored the first 10 points of the game, a blocked field goal return appeared to have swung the momentum in Wilmington's favor. Freshman David Branham (West Liberty, OH/West Liberty-Salem) blocked the attempt, and it was recovered by freshman James South (South Charleston, OH/Southeastern) – who returned it 10 yards before making a pitch to junior Amari Bryant (West Chester, OH/Lakota West). The cornerback took the return to the remaining 65 yards for a touchdown.

Neither team could score on their next two possessions, but Muskingum finally found an answer with a 10-play, 92-yard drive. Every play of the drive was on the ground, and they only needed to convert one third down. They scored on their final two possessions of the first half to take a 29-7 lead into the locker room.

Muskingum added touchdowns in the second and third quarters before Wilmington would tally its first offensive score of the game.

Freshman quarterback Blake Valenzuela (Keystone Hts., FL/Keystone Hts.) found senior Matt Stooksbury (Centerburg, OH/Highland) from six yards out, capping a 15-play, 73-yard drive. Wilmington converted a fourth down and third down on the drive.

Valenzuela was 13-of-20 for 109 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions. Six of his completions went to freshman Tyrik Burns (Newport News, VA/Denbign), who recorded 53 yards on his receptions. Stooksbury added three catches for 34 yards.

Sophomore Chase Manica (Shelbyville, KY/Shelby County) was held to 29 yards on 18 carries, while freshman Eric Flynn Jr. (Cleveland, OH/Central Catholic) had 25 yards on seven carries and freshman Tahj Sho-Johnson (Princeton, WVa./Princeton) tallied 23 yards on three carries.

Junior Cody Reigelsperger (Trenton, OH/Edgewood) and junior Tarrell Starckey (Richmond, VA/Highland Springs) finished with 11 tackles each, while junior Nick Williams (Cleveland, OH/Fairview) added 10 stops. Sophomore David Henry (Wilmington, OH/Wilmington) added eight tackles, including a team-high 3.5 tackles for loss.

Wilmington concludes the season at 0-10 overall, 0-9 in the OAC.
