Football falls to JCU in Homecoming game

The Wilmington College football team suffered a 69-0 Homecoming loss Saturday to the sixth-ranked John Carroll Blue Streaks Saturday at Williams Stadium.

John Carroll scored on eight of its nine first-half possessions, the only stop coming at the end of the half.

"(John Carroll) is (the type of team) we want to be," said Wilmington head coach Stacey Hairston. "Our players can see the level that we want to strive to be. They are a very good football team. But, we have to worry about making ourselves better."

Wilmington played without its starting offensive tackle and two back-up quarterbacks due to a personal incident.

As JCU was scoring on their possessions, things went bad to worse as Wilmington's only remaining healthy quarterback was injured right before halftime. With the injury, junior receiver Justin Lee (Middletown, OH/Madison) had to take the snaps for the entire second half.

Lee finished 4-of-12 for 77 yards with no interceptions in his first career appearance at quarterback. He added a catch for 12 yards before having to be the offensive triggerman.

Sophomore Chase Manica (Shelbyville, KY/Shelby County) had his string of three consecutive 100-yard games come to an end as he finished with 85 yards on 21 carries. Freshman Tyrik Burns (Newport News, VA/Denbign) had two receptions for 33 yards, while freshman Alex Gray (Madisonville, KY/North Hopkins) finished with one catch for a team-high 46 yards.

Junior Nick Williams (Cleveland, OH/Fairview) led Wilmington with eight tackles, snapping a string of four straight double-figure tackle games.

Sophomore David Henry (Wilmington, OH/Wilmington) finished with seven tackles, two for loss with a caused fumble and fumble recovery. Freshman Kevin Carter (Louisville, KY/Pleasure Ridge Park) added seven tackles, including one for a loss.

Wilmington (0-5 overall, 0-4 OAC) returns to Williams Stadium 1:30 p.m. Saturday to face Baldwin Wallace.
