MARIETTA - Sophomore Tarrell Starckey recorded a career-high 22 tackles Saturday, but the Wilmington College football team suffered the 50-22 loss to Marietta at Don Drumm Stadium.
Wilmington took the lead late in the first quarter as quarterback Brandon Arehart (Wilmington, OH/Wilmington) capped a five-play, 59-yard drive with a six-yard touchdown pass to junior Matt Stooksbury (Centerburg, OH/Highland).
However, Marietta seized control of the game with three straight touchdowns.
Freshman Grant Brown (Stoutsville, OH/Stoutsville) connected on a 32-yard field goal as time expired in the first half. The Fightin' Quakers pulled to within six on a three-yard run from freshman Zak Kruer (Miamisburg, OH/Miamisburg) with 8:25 remaining in the third quarter.
The two teams traded scores with the WC touchdown coming via a 43-yard strike from Arehart to sophomore Jeremy Duncan (Cincinnati, OH/Archbishop Moeller).
The Pioneers made it a two-possession game on a one-yard touchdown run, and then iced the game with a interception return with 5:34 remaining in the game.
Arehart finished the game 21-of-41 for 317 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. He passed former quarterback Billy Blackburn for fifth all-time in passing yards (6,161) and passing attempts (1,055). Duncan was the team's leading receiver, hauling in eight passes for 126 yards and a touchdown.
Kruer rushed for a career-high 91 yards on 20 carries and one touchdown.
Sophomore Amari Bryant (West Chester, OH/Lakota West) added a career-high 13 tackles, while freshman Trent Waters (Bowling Green, OH/Bowling Green) tallied a career-high 10 tackles in his first career start.
Wilmington (0-7 overall, 0-6 OAC) hosts John Carroll 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
