MARIETTA, Ohio – Marietta College came back from a four-run deficit in game one and batted around in consecutive innings in game two to sweep the Wilmington College baseball team 8-7 and 16-5 in an Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) series played at Don Schaly Stadium on Saturday.
In game one Nick Silvis got the Fightin' Quakers' offense going with a two-RBI triple to right center that scored both Gage Bley and Joe Legin. The Pioneers would get one run back in the bottom of the second, but Legin stretched the visitor's lead back to two (3-1) with an RBI-single that scored Antonio Miller in the third.
Marietta was held scoreless in the bottom of the third and fourth, and Wilmington continued to plate runs as a Gage Bley fielder's choice scored a run and another Silvis RBI-hit, this one a single to center field, put the Quakers up 5-1.
Jared Ferenchak, Wilmington's starter, would pitch into the seventh inning and allow four earn runs and depart the game with a 7-5 lead. The Quakers' bullpen couldn't hold it, however as the Pioneers would plate three runs in the eighth before Wilmington could record an out in the inning to complete the comeback.
Lance Fleischman took the loss for Wilmington allowing one earned run on two hits in one inning pitched. Brendan Lacorato earned the win for Marietta allowing one earned run with eight strikeouts in 4.1 innings pitched. Sam Matthews picked up his sixth save of the season for the Pioneers.
Bley finished the game 4-for-5 with two RBIs and a run scored while Silvis turned in a 3-for-4 performance with three RBIs. Miller, Legin and Jake Hyatt all finished with two hits each. Drew Holderbach led Marietta with a 4-for-4 performance while Damien Yenzi, who hit a two-run home run to spark the Pioneer comeback in the eighth, finished 3-for-3 with a home run.
In game two, Wilmington once again scored first as an RBI-double from Bley and an RBI-single from Silvis plated two runs in the first. After Marietta would score three in the bottom of the second, a Joe Allinder RBI-double that scored Bley tied the game 3-3 in the third.
After a scoreless fourth inning for both teams, Marietta's offense batted around in both the fifth and sixth innings. In total, the Pioneers plated 13 runs to put the game away.
Jacob Griewahn, Wilmington's game two starter, dipped to 0-2 with the loss as he allowed three earned runs on five hits in four innings pitched. Jared Strickler earned the win in relief for Marietta.
Bley once again led the Quakers offensively finishing game two 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Silvis and Allinder also tallied multi-hit games. The Pioneers finished with 18 hits as a team.
Wilmington (6-21, 2-8 OAC) hosts Capital University for a pair of OAC games on Tuesday.
