WILMINGTON, Ohio – The Marietta College pitching staff held the Wilmington College baseball team's offense to one run and seven hits in 18 innings as the Pioneers defeated the Fightin' Quakers 5-0 and 11-1 in Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) action on Sunday afternoon.
In game one, which lasted a mere 1:51, Marietta jumped on Wilmington starter Lance Fleischman for two runs on three hits in the first and one run on two hits in the second. Fleischman settled down and kept the Pioneers scores in the third and fourth innings. The Quakers could not get anything going offensively and the Pioneers scored the game's final two runs in the fifth inning.
Fleischman took the loss allowing five earned runs on a dozen hits in seven innings pitched. Jared Ferenchak and Bryant McCarty both pitched a scoreless inning in relief.
David Stover went the distance for Marietta, striking out four and allowing four hits in the complete-game shutout.
Geoff Snyder, Damien Yenzi and Seamus Kenneally both had three hits for Marietta in game one including two doubles from Yenzi. Mike Hale was 2-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored. Four Quakers – Jake Hyatt, Kasey Bottroff, Gage Bley and David Poynter – all hit singles.
In game two, Wilmington's offense got things started in game two with a two-out rally in the bottom of the first. Hyatt doubled and was driven home by a single from Kleindl. Unfortunately for Wilmington, the hosts would muster just one more in over the final eight innings.
Marietta tied the game in the second and blew the contest wide open with a seven-run, five-hit top of the third inning. The Pioneers would add the final three runs in the eighth.
Matt Oney dipped to 0-4 on the season with the loss as he allowed five earned runs in 2.1 innings pitched. Tyler McDanel allowed just one run in 3.2 innings pitched while Joey Hollback and Logan Brofft didn't allow a run in relief late in the game.
Scott Oberhelman earned the victory allowed three hits and striking out five in eight innings. Ray Hukill finished the game for Marietta with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
Mike Hale and Kenneally both had three hits for the Pioneers, who tallied 14 base knocks in game two. Chua, Hyatt and Kleindl all had one hit for Wilmington.
The Quakers (9-21, 1-11 OAC) head to the University of Mount Union for a conference series tomorrow (Monday).
