Baseball Opens 2018 Season with Quaker Bowl Series at Earlham This Weekend

QUAKER BOWL RIVALRY

WILMINGTON Ohio – The Wilmington College baseball team opens up its 2018 regular season with a four-game series against Earlham College at Sadler Stadium on Saturday and Sunday.

The Series: A doubleheader is scheduled for noon and 3 p.m. on Saturday followed by a doubleheader on Sunday at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m.

The Teams: Earlham and Wilmington. Earlham is 4-0 overall and looking to extend its four-game win streak after a 9-5 win over Wittenberg University on Monday. Wilmington looks to open its season with a strong start against Earlham after a frustrating season going 7-33 overall and 2-16 in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC).

The Coaches: Dan Cleaver is going into his sixth season with the Fightin' Quakers baseball team; the previous four seasons have been as head coach. Cleaver looks to lead his team to a Quaker Bowl series win over Earlham this weekend. Steve Sakosits is in his eighth season leading the Earlham baseball program.

Hitters to Watch: Senior Joshua Chua led the Fightin' Quakers last year with a .320 batting average along with 29 RBIs, six home runs and seven stolen bases. Junior Jake Hyatt also looks to start of the season where he left off, hitting .319 with 13 doubles and three home runs. Redshirt sophomore infielder Dre Davis and fellow freshman infielder Marc Gendreau both maintain a .500 batting average along with a combined 13 RBIs on the season so far. Look for sophomore Isaiah Shake to get in on the action as well as he has a .545 batting average with three RBIs and three stolen bases.

Pitchers to Watch: Sophomore Matt Oney led the Fightin' Quakers last year in innings pitched (53.0), wins (3), and ERA (5.94) while also striking out 14. Junior Jared Ferenchak pitched in 48 innings while earning two wins last year and striking out 18. No other Wilmington pitcher threw over 45 innings.  Earlham junior Walter Talcott leads the team with in innings pitched (7.0), ad ERA (2.57) while striking out six in his one victory so far this season.

Quaker Bowl Rivalry: The athletics departments of Wilmington and Earlham have re-created the Quaker Bowl rivalry. Originally a traveling trophy for just football and men's basketball, the bowl will now be competed for across all sports the two schools compete in. Wilmington leads the 2017-18 standings 6-1 with the only loss being in volleyball. More information on this year's Quaker Bowl matchup can be found by visiting the link above.

Series History:  The Quaker Bowl series has gone Earlham's way as it have won all 11 matchups since the 2011 season.
