Cougars sweep @DubC_Baseball

The Wilmington College baseball team dropped both ends of a non-conference doubleheader to UC-Clermont Thursday at Tewksbury-Delaney Field, losing the first game, 12-6, and falling in the second game, 13-6.

Wilmington (3-28 overall) stays home to play Mount Union 1 p.m. Saturday. The baseball program with honor the contributions of Roenick Whitney (Goshen, OH/Goshen), Clay Cleaver (Pleasant Plain, OH/Little Miami) and Mike Orahood (South Vienna, OH/Northeastern) prior to the game.

GAME ONE: UC CLERMONT 12, WILMINGTON 6

The Cougars took advantage of seven Wilmington turnovers to score six unearned runs in the game. The biggest blows came during a seven-run, sixth inning in which UCC tallied three unearned markers.

The miscues help waste a solid outing by junior Billy Foster (Xenia, OH/Xenia), who took the loss, allowing six runs (three earned) in 5 2/3 innings on seven hits. Foster allowed just two hits over his first five innings of action.

Wilmington took the lead in the first as Cleaver opened the inning with a double and junior Max Ramsey (Waynesville, OH/Waynesville) walked. A groundout moved the runners to second and third, and Cleaver scored as freshman Kyle Short (Trenton, OH/Edgewood) reached on an error. A single by freshman Jake Robinson (Westerville, OH/Central) brought home Ramsey and Short.

It stayed 3-0 until UCC tallied a pair of unearned runs crossed the plate in the top of the fifth and then seized control with its seven-run inning. They added a three-spot in the eighth.

GAME TWO: UC CLERMONT 13, WILMINGTON 6

UC-Clermont scored in six of the nine innings, including seven in the first four innings to run out to a 7-1 lead. The Cougars scored three runs each in the seventh and eighth innings.

Whitney scored on a passed ball in the second inning, and a two-run double by Robinson in the sixth brought WC to within 7-3. It would be as close as they would get. The Fightin' Quakers scored one in seventh and two in the ninth.

Keith Hayes (Beavercreek, OH/Beavercreek) had two RBI and a run scored, while Short was the only player with multiple hits.

Cleaver took the loss, allowing seven runs (six earned) on eight hits in four innings of work. He walked seven with no strikeouts.
