RICHMOND, IN – The Wilmington College baseball team was swept in a non-conference doubleheader Wednesday by Earlham, 8-5 and 17-1, at Sadler Field. It was a doubleheader rescheduled from March 1. The two games cap a stretch in which the Fightin' Quakers played 14 games in 11 days, and five in the last three.

GAME ONE: EARLHAM 8, WILMINGTON 5

Wilmington jumped out to a 3-0 lead, but the Battlin' Quakers scored in each of the final five innings – including four in the fifth inning to post the victory in the opener.

Freshman Jake Robinson (Westerville, OH/South) and junior Corey Walker (Hillsboro, OH/Hillsboro) opened the game with walks and moved up a base on a groundout. An one-out groundout by Kyle Short (Edgewood, OH/Trenton) and a double by Tyler Schrock (Waynesville, OH/Waynesville) gave WC a 2-0 lead.

Robinson smacked a two-out single in the top of the fourth to score Roenick Whitney (Goshen, OH/Goshen), who opened the inning with a walk.

Meanwhile starter Clay Cleaver (Pleasant Plain, OH/Little Miami) had allowed just one run, a solo homerun, on four hits through four innings. However, Earlham mounted a scoring push in the fifth. A pair of one-out walks sandwiched a single, and EC had the bases loaded. A single plated two runs, followed by an RBI groundout and RBI single to give home team a 4-3 lead.

Schrock added a two-out, two-run double in the seventh inning to pull Wilmington to within a run (6-5).

Earlham added single runs in the seventh and eighth innings to account for the final score.

Walker finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored, while Cleaver was 2-for-5 with a run scored. Schrock drove in a team-high three runs on a 2-for-4 hitting day.

Cleaver took the loss (1-1), allowing five earned runs on seven hits in 4 1/3 innings.

GAME TWO: EARLHAM 17, WILMINGTON 1

Wilmington recorded eight hits, but was limited to a RBI groundout in the eighth inning in their 17-1 loss.

Short grounded out with one out to score Robinson with the Fightin' Quakers. Robinson went 3-for-4 with a double. Cleaver finished 2-for-4 for Wilmington.

Freshman Tyler McDaniel (Trenton, OH/Edgewood) allowed nine earned runs on nine hits to fall to 0-1 on the season.

Wilmington (3-11) will kick off Ohio Athletic Conference action with a doubleheader against Ohio Northern Saturday. First pitch at Tewksbury-Delaney Field is scheduled for 1 p.m.
