@DubC_Baseball swept by Oberlin

AVON – The Wilmington College baseball team dropped a pair of non-conference games to Oberlin Tuesday at All-Pro Freight Field. The Fightin' Quakers have lost seven straight to fall to 3-9 on the season.

Wilmington returns to the field 1 p.m. Wednesday in a non-conference twinbill against Earlham in Richmond, IN. The doubleheader was rescheduled from March 1.

GAME ONE: OBERLIN 5, WILMINGTON 2

The Yeomen scored two runs in the fifth inning to tie the game, and took the lead with three runs in the sixth inning to record the victory.

Freshman Kyle Short (Trenton, OH/Edgewood) gave Wilmington the lead with an RBI single in the top of the fourth inning, scoring junior Corey Walker (Hillsboro, OH/Hillsboro), who started the inning by reaching on an error. Wilmington tacked on another unearned run in the fifth inning as freshman Daniel Hayes (Beavercreek, OH/Beavercreek) scored on a throwing error.

Oberlin got those runs back in the bottom portion of the fifth with a one-out, bases-loaded double. The host Yeomen got a two-run triple in the sixth inning to take the lead, and then added an insurance run on a squeeze play.

Senior Roenick Whitney (Goshen, OH/Goshen) took the loss (0-1) in relief, allowing three runs (two earned) in 1 2/3 innings of work. Walker started and allowed two earned runs on three hits in 4 1/3 innings.

Freshman Jake Robinson (Westerville, OH/Central) accounted for two of Wilmington's three hits.

GAME TWO: OBERLIN 12, WILMINGTON 4

Oberlin scored eight unanswered runs over the final three innings to break a 4-4 tie and to record the 12-4 win in the nightcap.

Robinson opened the game by getting hit and moving to second on a wild pitch. Walker sacrificed him over to third, and junior Clay Cleaver (Pleasant Plain, OH/Little Miami) gave WC the lead with a groundout. However, the Yeomen answered with four runs in the bottom of the second inning.

After three straight walks to load the bases, the Fightin' Quakers were in business in the fourth inning. Hayes flew out to score Whitney, and then Robinson brought home another run with an RBI single. Cleaver capped the scoring with a two-out, ground rule double to score Hayes.

The Yeomen tallied three runs in fifth and sixth innings, and capped the scoring with two more in the seventh.

Robinson finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and run scored, while Cleaver was 1-for-5 with two RBI.
