The Wilmington College baseball team wrapped up the 2014 season Saturday, falling in an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader, 10-0 and 16-3, to #23 Marietta at Tewksbury-Delaney Field.

Wilmington hung close with the nationally-ranked Pioneers through the first eight innings of the opener, but Marietta blew the game open with six runs in the ninth inning. Marietta did a bulk of its damage with two outs scoring nine of its 10 runs. Seven of those runs scored after the Pioneers had two outs and no runners on.

Freshman Austin Merkle (Wilmington, OH/Clinton-Massie) falls to 0-3 on the season. He allowed four earned runs on six hits in 5 2/3 innings of work with three strikeouts and five walks.

Sophomore Clay Cleaver (Pleasant Plain, OH/Little Miami) went 2-for-4 with a double and senior Brandon Arehart (Wilmington, OH/Wilmington) added a triple in three plate appearances.

A couple big innings sunk Wilmington as the Pioneers tallied seven in the sixth and four in the ninth en route to completing the sweep with a 16-3 win in the nightcap.

Wilmington did all of its scoring in the sixth inning as junior Dan Conroy (Columbus, OH/Centennial) reached on an error to start the inning, and a double by Cleaver put runners on second and third. Arehart brought them both home with a single, and came around to score on a junior Roenick Whitney (Goshen, OH/Goshen) triple. Whitney finished the game 2-for-4 with a double and a triple.

Cleaver and Arehart were both 2-for-4 in the game.

Sophomore Cole Voltz (Mt. Sterling, OH/Pleasant Plain) lasted 1/3 of an inning in picking up the loss. He allowed four runs (two earned) on three hits with two walks. Freshman Samuel Cranor (Cincinnati, OH/LaSalle) pitched well in relief, allowing one unearned run in 4 2/3 innings with three hits and a strikeout.

Wilmington wraps its season 4-30 overall, 2-16 in OAC action.
