Baseball swept by Mount Union

ALLIANCE – The Wilmington College baseball team was swept Saturday by Mount Union, 17-1 and 14-4, in Ohio Athletic Conference action at 23rd Street Field.

Mount Union scored four runs in three separate innings, the fourth, fifth and seventh, and scored in six of their eight plate appearances in the 17-1 win in the opener.

Wilmington scored its only run of the game as Clay Cleaver (Pleasant Plain, OH/Little Miami) tripled with one out in the seventh inning, and scored as senior Brandon Arehart (Wilmington, OH/Wilmington) reached on an error. Arehart finished 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI.

Sophomore Corey Walker (Hillsboro, OH/Hillsboro) and sophomore Tyler Schrock (Waynesville, OH/Waynesville) were both 2-for-4 for Wilmington.

Walker (1-6) took the loss, allowing seven runs (five earned) on seven hits in 3 2/3 innings. He added one strikeout and four walks.

The Fightin' Quakers scored in the top of the first of the nightcap as sophomore Alec Hutzelman (Centerville, OH/Centerville), who opened inning with a single, scored on a throwing error. However, Mount Union answered by scoring in five of the next six innings – including a seven-run second.

WC added two runs in the fifth and one in the eighth of the 14-4 loss.

Walker finished the game 3-for-4 with a run scored and RBI, while junior Roenick Whitney (Goshen, OH/Goshen) and Schrock were 2-for-4 for the Fightin' Quakers.

Sophomore Cole Voltz (Mt. Sterling, OH/Madison Plains) took the loss, falling to 1-3, allowing nine earned runs on eight hits in 1 1/3 innings.

Wilmington (3-28 overall, 2-14 OAC) returns to action 4 p.m. Tuesday in a non-conference doubleheader against Ohio Christian.
