Hutzelman pushes hitting streak to seven

RICHMOND, IN – Sophomore Alec Hutzelman recorded three of Wilmington's five hits as the Fightin' Quakers fell to Earlham Wednesday, 4-2, in non-conference action at Randal R. Sadler Field.

Hutzelman, who went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two runs scored, pushed his hitting streak to seven games. He has four multi-hit games, including a three-hit performance to start the streak, during the seven-game run.

Earlham took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the first off starter Austin Merkle (Wilmington, OH/Clinton-Massie).

The Fightin' Quakers got a run back in the top of the second as junior Roenick Whitney (Goshen, OH/Goshen) scored Hutzelman, who opened the inning with a double.

With two more runs in the bottom of the third inning, EC pushed its advantage to 4-1.

Once again Hutzelman started another scoring inning with a fourth-inning double. He moved to third as junior Mike Orahood (South Vienna, OH/Northeastern) reached on a two-out error. Hutzelman scored as Orahood was in a rundown during a pickoff.

That would be the extent of the game's scoring.

Sophomore Tyler Schrock (Waynesville, OH/Waynesville) hurled a season-high 5 1/3 innings, allowing no runs on five hits with two walks and no strikeouts. In his first career start, Merkle (0-2) was saddled with the loss. He yielded four runs, all earned, on seven hits with two walks and a strikeout in 2 2/3 innings of work.

Sophomore Blake Schmidt (Cincinnati, OH/McNicholas) went 1-for-4 with a double, and has now recorded a hit in five of the last six games.

Wilmington (3-26) returns to Ohio Athletic Conference action Saturday, traveling to Mount Union.
