Wildness storms through staff in sweep

The combination of a bout of wildness, patient hitters and batters willing to get hit was too much for the Wilmington College baseball team to overcome as the Fightin' Quakers were swept, 15-0 and 14-4, by #10 Heidelberg Friday at Tewksbury-Delaney Field in Ohio Athletic Conference action.

Wilmington pitchers issued 25 walks and hit 13 batters, and the Student Princes scored 29 runs on 22 hits.

Heidelberg scored runs in seven of the nine innings in the opener, only scoring multiple runs in the third (four runs) and the seventh innings (six runs).

Sophomore Billy Foster (Xenia, OH/Xenia) took the loss, allowing five runs (four earned) in three innings of work. He walked six and struck out one. Dan Conroy (Columbus, OH/Centennial) allowed eight runs on just three hits with six walks and a hit batter, while McKale Stakely (Pataskala, OH/Licking Heights) pitched the final three innings, surrendering two runs on four hits with three walks and three hit batters.

Senior Brandon Arehart (Wilmington, OH/Wilmington) was the lone player with multiple hits, going 2-for-4.

The Student Princes opened the nightcap by scoring two runs in each of the first three innings before exploding for six in the fourth. They added a two spot in the eighth inning.

Sophomore Nathan Dean (Nelsonville, OH/Nelsonville-York) brought home the first run, scoring freshman Ryan Henning (Milford, OH/Milford) – who doubled – in the second inning.

Arehart had an RBI sacrifice fly in the seventh inning and freshman Samuel Cranor (Cincinnati, OH/LaSalle) had a two-run single in the ninth inning.

Seven different players recorded a hit for Wilmington in the nightcap.

Junior Tommy Chamberlain (Trenton, OH/Edgewood) allowed 11 runs (nine earned) on seven hits, walking two and hitting six, in 3 2/3 innings. Sophomore Alec Hutzelman (Centerville, OH/Centerville) allowed two runs in 3 2/3 innings and sophomore Blake Schmidt (Cincinnati, OH/McNicholas) allowed one run in 1 1/3 innings.

Wilmington (3-23 overall, 2-12 OAC) steps away from OAC action 1 p.m. Saturday, playing UC-Clermont at Brian Wilson Field.
